Historic High Street Precinct
See original buildings from the riverboat boom times. Located along High Street these are preserved and occupied in a variety of ways, including boutique-style shops, accommodation and restaurants.

From the 1860’s to 1900, Echuca-Moama was the hub of Australia’s riverboat trade. Paddlesteamers chugged along the Murray and brought their cargoes of wool to Echuca for transport to the Port of Melbourne. Much of the wool was for export from Melbourne to London.
At the peak in 1872, more than 240 paddlesteamers travelled regularly into the bustling Port of Echuca. Today as a reminder of the boom times, it is magical to hear the nostalgic whistle of the riverboats as they continue to grace the river. The world’s largest fleet of operating riverboats is housed in Echuca, with many restored to their former glory.
The historic wharf has been revived, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience a working steam port at the Port of Echuca. Many of Echuca’s original buildings have been renovated to recapture the old streetscape, giving the town an authentic and endearing flavour.

Still to this day, the river attracts people to Echuca-Moama. Water activities like canoeing, fishing, swimming, waterskiing and cruising along in a house boat are a pleasant pass time. Others prefer the land for their play. This may include a day at the horse races or a round of golf on one of the many championship courses in the area. Golf courses are set in locations that capture the views and ambience of the natural environment.
Bushlands surround the twin towns, with good walking, cycling and horse-riding trails. The Barmah-Millewa Forest includes the largest area of ancient river redgums, a world heritage-listed wetland and hundreds of animal and plant species. The forest is rich in indigenous culture of the Yorta Yorta people.
It is idyllic to stay overnight in the setting of Echuca-Moama, and easy to find the right place for you. The abundance of choice includes self-contained units or villas, motel rooms with modern facilities, romantic B&B’s with log fires and spa baths, luxury resorts, houseboats upon the river and great family accommodation in camping grounds and caravan parks.

The houseboat accommodation option is quite unique to this river destination. These self-drive boats have comfortable facilities and are truly special for groups of friends or families. There is flexibility to steer the boat along the river to the places that you wish to discover, and all at your own holiday pace. In the evening, you will be gently swayed to sleep by the rippling waters.
Simply sitting on the banks of the Murray River with a picnic basket can be a most enjoyable experience. Watch the paddlesteamers go by, view the native birds and bask
in the glorious sun.
Shopping precincts in Echuca-Moama are alive with variety and vitality. It is not unusual to find something unique in a gift shop or second-hand book store.
Sporting equipment shops are in good supply to assist the travelling adventurer. Discover a local produce outlet for a delectable treat or an old-fashioned lolly store for a sweet treat.
It is a true joy to ‘take to the waters’ in this glorious location with the mighty Murray River as the jewel in the crown
