These two towns are also separated by the Murray River. The early explorers saw the region’s open grassland as exceptional for grazing and through agriculture the area was settled.
Before a railway line extended to Yarrawonga in 1886, paddlesteamers travelled the Murray River on route to Albury with merchandise including timber, wheat and wool. Whilst there is no longer access into this section of the river for riverboats, the river still plays a central role in everyday life.
The next big development in the formation of this inland watersports epicentre was the 1939 opening of the Yarrawonga Weir. This created Lake Mulwala as part of the largest irrigation system in the southern hemisphere.
The water level remains relatively constant year round, making it the ideal destination for watersports activities. As a monument to the farming settlers, the National Trust classified Byramine Homestead, is open for visiting. An opportunity to see the former home of one of Australia’s earliest pioneers, Elizabeth Hume.

Stunning river beaches can be found at every turn along the river, creating the perfect place for a holiday on the water. Up to 103 river beaches can be discovered between Yarrawonga and Ulupna Island, and Thompsons Beach at Cobram Barooga is a must see.
Walking tracks through peaceful bush settings along the Murray River are an oasis of natural flora and fauna.
Meander through the majestic river red gums that adorn the banks, and take the time to possibly capture a rare glimpse of a playful platypus basking on the water’s edge.
Lake Mulwala has become a diverse wildlife sanctuary.
Cockatoos, pelicans, galahs, ibis and a variety of other birds have found nesting spots amongst the now flooded red gums.
The river and lake are enjoyed in more active ways too.
Yarrawonga-Mulwala is known for watersports, like skiing, fishing, canoeing, boat racing and jet-skiing. The summer months are alive with visitors who partake in all kinds of pursuits.
Quality and picturesque championship golf courses are aplenty in the region, with 45 holes available at Yarrawonga and Border Golf Club and a further 36 holes just down the road at Cobram Barooga. These courses provide yet another terrific opportunity to walk amongst the natural wonders, whilst testing your handicap.
